Comments  (English):
Select Hostel is a very pleasant place to stay. The rooms are nice and the water in the shower is hot. The staff are friendly and do not harass you with aggressive offers to arrange tours, etc, as many other hotels in Cairo (and Egypt as a whole) do. However, most of the staff do not speak much English, which makes communicating rather difficult. The included breakfast is good, but it is supposed to be available from 8:00 onward and it usually doesn't appear until 9:30 or 10:00.

One other suggestion I would make is do not bother putting your valuables (e.g. passport) in the hostel safety deposit box. They will be safe in your room. The problem with the hostel's safety deposit box is that it is apparently kept at an undisclosed location off-site - so when you want to retrieve your valuables, it is a major hassle and it can take up to a day and a half to process your request.

The location of the hostel is good - it is not totally central, but it is within close walking distance of the downtown core of Cairo. However, most people (e.g. cab drivers, local friends you may want to meet you at the hostel, passersby you may want to ask directions of, etc), will not have heard of this hostel and it is fairly hidden on the street, so make sure you know the main cross-streets so you can find it. The hostel is also right next to a Jewish synagogue, and is under armed police surveillance & protection 24 hours / day.

Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay at Select Hostel and would recommend it to anyone staying in Cairo!
